Despite the access, producers say they are struggling to keep score on the war's status. It is often difficult to square the up close battle scenes with Pentagon assertions that all is moving apace. And military planners, they say, are not always at the ready to help them do that. It is a conundrum for the news divisions, which know that viewers are thirsting for new information. Each network wants to be the first to give it to them — perhaps lifting ratings in the process.
